BackBack Hezbollah introduces new weapons and tactics against Israel as war in Gaza drags on

This week, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah executed a strike on a military post in northern Israel utilizing a drone that launched two missiles. This attack resulted in injuries to three Israeli soldiers, with one reported to be in serious condition, as confirmed by the Israeli military.

Over the past seven months, Hezbollah has frequently launched missiles across the border into Israel, but Thursday's incident marks the first time the group has successfully conducted a missile strike from within Israeli airspace.

In recent weeks, Hezbollah has increased its attacks on Israel, a trend that intensified following an Israeli incursion into Rafah in the Gaza Strip. This escalation has seen Hezbollah striking deeper into Israeli territory and employing more advanced weaponry. According to Lebanese political analyst Faisal Abdul-Sater, who monitors Hezbollah closely, these actions serve as a message to Israel, indicating Hezbollah’s capacity and readiness to escalate further if necessary.

While cross-border exchanges of fire have been a constant since early October, the complexity and frequency of Hezbollah's attacks have ramped up following Iran's significant drone and missile assault on Israel in mid-April. This recent escalation by Hezbollah is viewed as a direct response to the Israeli military's activities in Gaza.

An anonymous Lebanese official, familiar with Hezbollah's operations, noted that in the last two weeks, the group has intensified its actions, particularly following Israel’s incursion into southern Rafah. This official, who was not authorized to discuss military details publicly, highlighted the strategic timing of Hezbollah's increased aggression.

On Thursday afternoon, a Hezbollah drone armed with missiles targeted an Israeli military post. This incident followed a recent attack where Hezbollah fired three anti-tank guided missiles at an Israeli military surveillance post, successfully striking their target and downing a surveillance balloon. This event was confirmed by the Israeli military, which reported the loss of the spy balloon over Lebanon.

The night prior to this drone strike, Hezbollah executed a deep incursion into Israeli territory, deploying explosive drones to attack a base near Ilaniya, close to Tiberias, approximately 35 kilometers from the Lebanese border. The Israeli military reported no casualties from this attack.

Analyst Abdul-Sater emphasized that the Iran-led coalition, known as the axis of resistance—which includes Hamas—has warned that an Israeli full-scale invasion of Rafah could trigger escalations on multiple fronts. Recently, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed an attack on a US destroyer, and Iran-backed militants in Iraq have launched a series of drone attacks toward Israel, indicating a broader regional involvement.

Hezbollah’s use of sophisticated weaponry, including missile-firing drones and the Almas guided missile, has heightened concerns within the Israeli military. Military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani acknowledged that Hezbollah has been increasingly aggressive in the north, with a notable rise in missile and drone attacks.

In adapting their tactics, Hezbollah has managed to minimize its own casualties compared to the initial stages of the conflict, demonstrating a strategic shift in their approach to the ongoing hostilities.
