Singapore Airlines: One dead after severe turbulence forces flight from London Heathrow to land in Bangkok
Severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London Heathrow to Bangkok caused one fatality, prompting an emergency landing.
A tragic incident occurred aboard a Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London to Singapore, resulting in one fatality and several injuries due to severe turbulence. Passengers reported being "launched into the ceiling" as the aircraft experienced sudden shaking and a dramatic drop in altitude.
The flight, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, departed from London Heathrow at 10:38 pm UK time on Monday. However, it was compelled to make an emergency landing in Bangkok after encountering turbulence. The aircraft touched down in the Thai capital at 3:45 pm local time on Tuesday (9:45 am UK time).
According to flight tracking data, the Boeing 777-300ER was cruising at 37,000 feet (11,280 meters) before plummeting 6,000 feet (1,830 meters) in approximately three minutes.
Passenger Dzafran Azmir, 28, recounted the harrowing experience, stating that the sudden tilting of the aircraft and subsequent shaking prompted passengers to brace themselves. He described a moment of panic as the plane experienced a significant drop, causing unsecured passengers to be forcefully propelled into the ceiling. Some passengers struck their heads on overhead baggage cabins, causing damage, while others collided with emergency equipment.
Social media footage depicted a scene of ambulances lined up at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport, ready to provide assistance to the injured upon the aircraft's arrival.
Singapore Airlines issued a statement expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and acknowledging the injuries sustained by passengers. The airline assured that it is cooperating with relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly.
The tragic event underscores the unpredictable nature of air travel and serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols, including fastening seat belts during flights to mitigate risks associated with turbulence.
