J&K Lok Sabha polls phase 6: Anantnag-Rajouri sees turnout of 51.35% till 5 pm, breaks 28-year-old record.
Until 5 pm, the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a voter turnout of 51.35 percent. Officials noted that the Rajouri assembly segment boasted the highest turnout at 67.09 percent, while Nowshera followed closely with 65.47 percent.
Only the Anantnag, Anantnag West, and Kulgam Assembly segments reported a turnout below 35 percent. This marks the first election in the constituency since the repeal of Article 370 five years ago.
Voting proceeded smoothly across the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, encompassing 18 assembly seats.
Following the 2022 delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir, Pulwama district and the Shopian assembly seat were excluded from the South Kashmir Lok Sabha constituency. Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, is contesting from this seat, traditionally a stronghold of her People's Democratic Party, against Mian Altaf Ahmad of the National Conference. Mufti had previously represented Anantnag in the Lok Sabha in 2004 and 2014, resigning in 2016 upon assuming the chief minister's office. In the former Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, voter turnout was approximately 9 percent in 2019 and close to 29 percent in 2014.
In the 11 Assembly segments within the Kashmir valley, the polling percentage stood at 42.26 percent by 5 pm.
Anantnag-Rajouri is one of the 58 Lok Sabha constituencies that participated in the sixth phase of elections. The voting took place in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana, and Odisha during this penultimate phase. The seventh phase is scheduled for June 1, with vote counting set for June 4.
