Captain, 3 other Army personnel killed in gunfight with terrorists in J&K's Doda

On Monday, in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, a deadly encounter between security forces and heavily armed terrorists resulted in the deaths of four Army personnel, including an officer, and one police officer. This attack was claimed by the 'Kashmir Tigers,' a shadow group associated with the Pakistan-backed terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM).

The Indian Army released a statement expressing their condolences. "General Upendra Dwivedi, COAS, and all ranks of Indian Army convey their deepest condolences to the bravehearts Captain Brijesh Thapa, Naik D Rajesh, Sepoy Bijendra and Sepoy Ajay Naruka, who laid down their lives in the line of duty, while undertaking a counter terrorist operation in Doda in order to ensure peace in the region," the statement read.

The confrontation occurred when the Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police initiated a joint cordon and search operation in the Dhari Gote Urarbagi area of the Desa forest belt, approximately 55 km from Doda town, late on Monday evening.

During the initial encounter, the terrorists tried to flee but were pursued by the troops, who were led by an officer. Despite the challenging terrain and thick foliage, another intense firefight ensued around 9 pm.

Officials reported that five soldiers sustained critical injuries during the clash. Unfortunately, four of them, including the officer, succumbed to their injuries later on.

In a statement, 'Kashmir Tigers' claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the clash occurred during a security forces' search operation targeting the "Mujahideen". This group had also claimed responsibility for an attack on an Army convoy in Kathua on July 9.

General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), updated Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the ground situation in Doda during a telephonic conversation.

The Doda encounter began when security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Desa forest area around 7.45 pm. The initial exchange of fire lasted over 20 minutes, during which security personnel suffered injuries. The injured were evacuated to a hospital, where their condition was reported as critical.

The operation continued as officials believed that two to three terrorists were still hiding in the area. The Army's 16 Corps, also known as White Knight Corps, confirmed that contact with the terrorists was reestablished around 9 pm, leading to a heavy gunfight. "Initial reports suggest injuries to our bravehearts," the White Knight Corps tweeted.

The encounter highlights the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir as they combat terrorism in the region. The bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers and police officers who lost their lives in this operation are a testament to their dedication to maintaining peace and security in the area.
