Stree 2 box office collection Day 1: Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao-starrer surpasses Animal, makes over Rs 64 cr.
Stree 2 opens to massive box office success, surpassing Animal and Pathaan, becoming the biggest Hindi opener of 2023, with strong performances across India.
The Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer Stree 2 had a phenomenal opening at the box office on Independence Day, exceeding all expectations. The film outpaced the opening day collections of 2023 hits like Animal and Pathaan, which earned Rs 63.8 crore and Rs 57 crore respectively. Stree 2 had preview shows on Wednesday evening before its full release on Thursday. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film grossed Rs 64.8 crore across both days, with Rs 9.4 crore on Wednesday night and Rs 55.4 crore on Thursday.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 stands as the biggest opener of the year. Previously, the highest Hindi film opener of 2023 was Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone's Fighter, which earned Rs 24.6 crore on its first day in January. The highest Indian opener of the year was Kalki 2898 AD, which grossed Rs 95 crore across multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil.
According to Sacnilk, Stree 2 had an overall occupancy of 77.09 percent on Thursday. In the Delhi-NCR region, the film had 1,200 shows with 86.75 percent occupancy, while in Mumbai, it had 1,103 shows with 81 percent occupancy. Released on Independence Day, the film is expected to benefit from the extended five-day weekend, with Monday being a holiday for Raksha Bandhan in many parts of the country. Stree 2 faced competition from John Abraham’s Vedaa and the Akshay Kumar-starrer Khel Khel Mein. Vedaa, also released in Tamil and Telugu, managed to collect Rs 6.52 crore across India, while Khel Khel Mein brought in Rs 5 crore. The Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor film is part of producer Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe, which began with Stree in 2018 and includes Roohi, Bhediya, and Munjya. Munjya, released earlier this year with minimal promotion, earned Rs 107.48 crore during its theatrical run, making it the third biggest Hindi hit of the year after Fighter (Rs 199.45 crore) and Shaitaan (Rs 149.49 crore).
