The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for Odisha due to a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
Odisha Rainfall Alert: On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that a new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several regions of Odisha over the next three days. The IMD's Bhubaneswar centre indicated that the low-pressure area, which has formed due to a cyclonic circulation in the central and northern Bay of Bengal, is likely to strengthen into a depression as it moves towards the northern Andhra Pradesh coast and southern Odisha. In response to the forecasted heavy rainfall, the IMD has issued an orange warning (be prepared) for the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
A yellow warning (be aware) is also in effect for the districts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Nuapada, Bargarh, Boudh, and Sonepur, advising residents to remain vigilant about changing weather conditions. For Friday, the IMD has elevated the alert to a red warning (take action) for Malkangiri, Koraput, and Gajapati districts due to the forecast of severe weather.
As a precaution, the Koraput collector has ordered the closure of all schools and anganwadi centers in the district on Friday and has advised residents to stay indoors.
Rayagada, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi districts are under an orange warning (be prepared to take action), indicating the need for readiness for potential disruptions.
Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for Nuapada, Bolangir, Boudh, Kandhamal, Sonepur, Bargarh, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur districts on Friday.
The IMD has also warned fishermen to avoid going out to sea along and off the Odisha coast from August 30 to September 1 due to expected rough sea conditions.
From June 1 to August 29, Odisha has recorded 804.1 mm of rainfall, which is below the average of 896.3 mm. During this period, Malkangiri district saw excess rainfall, 20 districts had normal rainfall, and the remaining nine districts experienced deficient rainfall, according to the IMD.
