"PM Modi Calls for Urgent Action on Women's Crimes, Describes It as a Major Societal Concern".

For the third time in recent weeks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue of women's safety, urging decisive action against crimes targeting women and children. His remarks came in response to recent protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital and the sexual abuse of two four-year-old girls in Badlapur near Mumbai.

During the National Conference of District Judiciary, PM Modi emphasized that “atrocities against women and the safety of children are pressing societal concerns.” He noted that while strict laws are in place to protect women, there is a need for more effective enforcement. “The quicker decisions are made in cases of violence against women, the greater the sense of security will be for half of the population,” he stated.

These comments follow nationwide outrage over the Kolkata case. On Friday, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi responded to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s second letter to PM Modi, reiterating the demand for stringent punishment for severe crimes like rape and rape-murder. Devi highlighted that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) already stipulates severe penalties, including a minimum of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for rape, which can extend to life imprisonment or even death depending on the crime's severity.

Last week, Modi condemned crimes against women as unforgivable and emphasized that those guilty should face no leniency. Speaking at the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ in Jalgaon, north Maharashtra, Modi declared that the safety of women must be a national priority. “The safety of mothers, sisters, and daughters is paramount,” he said, affirming that he would continue to advocate for this issue and press every political party and state government to ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are not spared.
