When Hugh Jackman Sacrificed $20 Million Salary For Logan To Ensure His Final Wolverine Film Will Be R-Rated.

Hugh Jackman reportedly took a pay cut to ensure his final performance as the mutant superhero Wolverine was as gory and foul-mouthed as the comic book character. Announcing his retirement from the role in 2017, Jackman stated that Logan would be his last appearance as Wolverine. Despite this, his retirement was short-lived, as he later returned for Deadpool 3 alongside Wolverine. At the time of Logan's production, Jackman was determined that his final Wolverine film would be his bloodiest and packed with more f-bombs than The Big Lebowski. To achieve an R rating for the film, Jackman reportedly took a significant salary reduction to persuade the studio to take the risk. James Mangold, who directed Logan, revealed this detail during a 2017 event in Texas where he showed 40 minutes of footage.

Ain’t It Cool writer Eric Vespe tweeted, “Mangold said that Hugh Jackman took a salary cut because he wanted to do an R-rated movie.”

Jackman has never confirmed the exact amount of his reduced salary for Logan, but it was less than the $20 million he earned for the previous two films in the Wolverine franchise.

In contrast, Jackman did not face similar financial adjustments for Deadpool 3. According to Fandomwire, he was paid $20 million to return from retirement for the film, which became one of the top-grossing films of 2024. Deadpool 3 has earned over $1.2 billion worldwide within five weeks of its release, making it one of the summer's biggest hits, though still trailing behind Inside Out 2, which grossed over $1.6 billion.
