India has launched Operation Sadbhav to deliver urgent aid to Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar in response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi.
On Sunday, India initiated Operation Sadbhav to provide urgent aid to Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, all severely impacted by Typhoon Yagi, which has claimed over 200 lives to date. The typhoon, which first struck the Philippines and caused over a dozen fatalities there, continued its westward path, causing heavy floods in southern China and then affecting parts of Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to hit Southeast Asia in decades, made landfall in the Philippines with winds reaching 149 kph (92 mph). Although the storm weakened on Sunday, heavy rainfall persisted, and rivers remained dangerously high.
India has provided humanitarian aid worth USD 1,000,000 to Vietnam and USD 100,000 to Laos. An Indian Air Force C-17 military transport aircraft delivered 10 tonnes of relief supplies to Laos, while 35 tonnes of aid were sent to Vietnam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and solidarity to Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh immediately after the typhoon hit. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also conveyed sympathies to Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Bui Thanh Son.
The Indian Navy quickly mobilized for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations in Myanmar’s Yangon. The Eastern Naval Command completed the overnight loading of aid, including drinking water, food, and medicine, onto a naval warship in Visakhapatnam for deployment to Yangon.
Myanmar’s military government has reported 74 deaths with more than 89 people still missing. The typhoon has displaced nearly 240,000 people, adding to the 3.4 million already displaced by ongoing civil conflict in the country.
The death toll in Vietnam has reached at least 226 due to landslides and flooding triggered by the typhoon. Extensive damage has been reported across factories and infrastructure throughout the country.
A flash flood in northern Vietnam devastated an entire hamlet, resulting in 30 deaths. Floodwaters from a mountain in Lao Cai province engulfed Lang Nu hamlet, burying 35 families in mud and debris.
Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand has experienced severe flooding, with many riverside villages submerged, complicating rescue efforts.
Authorities across the affected countries have advised residents to stay vigilant as heavy rainfall is expected to continue. Emergency teams are on high alert, and governments are coordinating efforts for prompt rescue operations.
