RG Kar rape case: Junior doctors express dissatisfaction with CBI investigation and plan new protests.
Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata are expressing dissatisfaction with the CBI's investigation into the rape and murder of their colleague.
Junior doctors protesting the rape and murder of their colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday voiced their frustration with the CBI's slow investigation and announced new demonstrations, according to PTI. Organized under the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum, the doctors criticized the CBI's chargesheet, which named only one suspect in the case. Forum spokesperson Debashis Halder expressed concerns that the involvement of "other perpetrators," including former principal Sandip Ghosh, has not been adequately addressed. "Has the role of other arrested individuals been thoroughly investigated?" Halder questioned.
He outlined plans for further protests, stating, "We will hold a rally in Kolkata on November 9 from College Square to Esplanade, alongside members of civil society. Similar rallies will take place throughout West Bengal." Additionally, a mass convention demanding justice for the slain doctor will be held on the same day on Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Esplanade. "We also encourage everyone in Bengal to light lamps in their neighborhoods on November 4," he added. The doctor was found murdered in the hospital's seminar hall on August 9, and a civil volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested. The CBI subsequently detained Sandip Ghosh and suspended officer Abhijit Mondal.
On October 21, the protesting junior doctors ended their fast, which began on October 5, after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who promised to address their concerns. Halder noted that junior doctors fear the current investigation may allow the accused to secure bail. "Why was such a routine investigation conducted? We want to know what steps the central agency has taken regarding higher officials in the hospital and whether they consulted higher-ups in the health department," he stated.
The junior doctors had planned a rally to the CBI office in Kolkata before Diwali to urge for a quicker investigation, but due to recent developments, they feel compelled to escalate their protests.
Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress criticized the junior doctors for their renewed agitation. Senior TMC MP Kalyan Bandyopadhyay claimed the movement had been co-opted by the CPI(M), arguing that the junior doctors lack a concrete issue. He questioned the purpose of their ongoing protests, which he believes are inconveniencing the public, while emphasizing that the case is still under investigation.
