Jhansi hospital fire: Death toll rises to 17 as two more rescued infants succumb to injuries.

Two more infants who were rescued from the fire at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, died on Sunday, raising the total death toll from the blaze to 17, according to PTI, citing a senior official. The tragic incident, which took place on November 15, initially claimed the lives of 10 newborns. A total of 39 infants were rescued from the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit during the fire. Narendra Singh Sengar, the principal of the medical college, confirmed to PTI that the two infants died on Saturday due to complications from their pre-existing health conditions. He explained that while 10 babies died in the fire, the others succumbed to their illnesses afterward.

A post-mortem was carried out on Saturday for the two infants, and the cause of death was attributed to "illness" in both cases. The bodies were returned to their families, Sengar said. He also noted that both infants had a birth weight of 800 grams, and one had a congenital heart defect.

Earlier, on Wednesday, three more rescued infants died due to their medical conditions. Doctors reported that one of these infants, born prematurely and weighing 1.2 kg, died from low blood pressure; another succumbed to infection and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC); and the third, also premature and weighing 1.2 kg, passed away from respiratory failure and shock.

With these recent deaths, the total number of rescued infants who died from health complications now stands at five. Sengar emphasized that these fatalities were due to serious health issues, not from burn injuries sustained in the fire.
