Airfares have moderated in 2024 relative to 2023, says govt.

The government has stated that airfares in 2024 have eased compared to 2023, with a notable reduction in ticket prices observed on various routes during festival seasons.
In response to concerns from some quarters about high airfares, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha that the government does not regulate airfares. Airlines are free to set their prices based on operational requirements, as long as they comply with existing regulations. He added, “…the government generally refrains from regulating airfares to foster market competition. However, it stays vigilant and steps in to adjust capacity between sectors to prevent unreasonable pricing, ensuring passenger comfort and welfare,” in a written reply on November 25.
Airfares are influenced by the dynamics of supply and demand. Mohol explained that the government, through continuous engagement with airlines and Online Travel Agents (OTAs), monitors airfare trends. He pointed out that airfares have moderated in 2024 compared to 2023. “Airlines have also been urged to maintain reasonable pricing while keeping passengers’ interests in mind. A decrease in fares was particularly noted during the festival seasons,” he said.
He also mentioned that airfare trends in India are significantly impacted by factors such as fuel prices, aircraft capacity, competition on specific routes, seasons, holidays, festivals, long weekends, and major events.
Additionally, Mohol highlighted that airport operational constraints have a major effect on pricing. The combination of limited capacity and high demand leads to fluctuations in ticket prices. “Considering the complexities of the Indian aviation industry, the government plays a facilitative role by creating an environment that supports the sector’s growth,” Mohol concluded.
