The Manipur government has extended the mobile internet suspension in nine districts until December 9, 2024, in response to the ongoing law and order situation.
The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services until December 9 (Monday) in nine districts, according to a recent order from the state’s home department. Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar stated that after reviewing the current law and order situation, the state government decided to continue the suspension of mobile internet, mobile data services, including VSATs and VPN services, in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl districts until 5:15 PM on December 9, 2024, in the public interest.
The internet suspension, which began on November 16 in seven districts, was extended to Jiribam and Pherzawl districts on November 17 for an additional two days, with exceptions made for leased line and FTTH connections for government offices or cases where the state government grants exemptions.
However, the government has decided to lift the suspension on Broadband services (ILL and FTTH), subject to certain terms and conditions. This decision was formalized by the commissioner in an order issued on November 18.
In a separate move, the government announced a relaxation of the curfew in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, and Thoubal districts on December 8, allowing residents to buy essentials from 5 AM to 4 PM. It’s also worth noting that normal classes in schools and colleges across the valley districts resumed on November 29 after the government lifted the curfew in these areas, following an order on November 28. Schools and colleges had been closed since November 18 due to the imposition of curfews following violent protests triggered by the discovery of the bodies of six civilians (three women and three children), who had been missing after an encounter between militants and security forces in Jiribam on November 11.
