Air India has placed an additional order for 100 Airbus aircraft, consisting of 10 A350 widebody jets and 90 A320 Family narrowbody planes, such as the A321neo. This follows last year’s historic order of 470 aircraft, the largest single purchase in aviation history, from both Airbus and Boeing. With this new order, Air India’s total Airbus fleet now stands at 350 planes, including six A350s that have already been delivered.
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, stated, "We see a clear need for Air India to expand its future fleet beyond the 470 firm orders made last year. These additional 100 Airbus aircraft will help position Air India for continued growth." Air India, which was the first Indian carrier to operate the fuel-efficient A350, currently uses these aircraft on long-haul routes such as Delhi to London and New York, enhancing both passenger comfort and connectivity. To support operational efficiency, the airline has partnered with Airbus for its Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C).
The Tata Group-owned airline received its second Airbus A350 aircraft in February. On December 23, 2023, it welcomed the first delivery of one of the 30 Airbus A350-900 jets. These A350-900s feature a three-class cabin with 316 seats designed by Collins Aerospace, including 28 business class suites with full-flat beds, 24 premium economy seats with extra legroom and unique features, and 264 spacious economy class seats.
