Woman missing after going under river ice trying to save her dog in Alaska
A woman is missing in Alaska after bravely attempting to save her dog, which went under the river ice. Search and rescue efforts are underway in challenging conditions.
Alaska State Troopers announced plans to resume the search on Tuesday for a woman who disappeared beneath the ice of an Anchorage area river over the weekend while attempting to rescue a dog, according to officials.
On Saturday around 2:15 p.m., a man and a woman were walking along the North Fork Eagle River Trail when one of their dogs entered the water, as reported by troopers in a statement on Monday. Both individuals entered the river to assist the dog, but the woman vanished after reaching an open area of water, according to troopers.
Alaska State Troopers' communication director, Austin McDaniel, stated on Monday, "The woman entered an open spot of water on the Eagle River and disappeared under the ice. That was the last she was seen by the adult male that was with her." Despite efforts by a dive and search team, as well as troopers on Sunday searching beneath the ice, the woman was not located. The next search is scheduled for Tuesday.
The man involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries. The North Fork Eagle River Trail's trailhead is situated approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage, and the Eagle River flows northwest in the region, north of downtown, eventually reaching the Cook Inlet.
