President gives assent to three Criminal Law amendment bills
The President has granted assent to three Criminal Law amendment bills, signifying legal reform in the Indian Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure.
On Monday, the President of India granted assent to the three bills aimed at overhauling the country's criminal justice system. This development has been officially noted on the Rashtrapati Bhavan website but is pending publication in the Gazette of India.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam are set to replace the existing Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act.
Initially introduced in Lok Sabha on August 11 under the titles Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, the bills underwent further examination by a parliamentary committee chaired by Brij Lal after their introduction. Subsequently, they were passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 21.
