Pakistan Commission Accepts Ex-PM Sharif's Nomination for February Poll

On Thursday, Pakistan's Pakistan Commission Accepts Ex-PM Sharif's Nomination for February Poll  s election commission reportedly accepted the nomination of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the 2024 elections, following a court decision that overturned two corruption convictions, as per ARY News.

However, Sharif's eligibility still hinges on the removal of a lifelong ban on holding any public office, making it unclear how his nomination was accepted. A hearing to address this ban is scheduled for January.

In 2017, the Supreme Court barred Sharif from participating in elections, citing dishonesty for failing to disclose income from a company owned by his son. More recently, two graft convictions were overturned by a court.

Having returned to Pakistan in October after four years of self-imposed exile in London, Sharif aims for a fourth premiership in the upcoming February 8 elections.

Sharif faces the significant challenge of reclaiming his support base from his main rival, former cricket star Imran Khan. Despite being incarcerated for graft, Khan remains popular after being ousted from the premiership in 2022. At 71, Khan was disqualified from the election due to a corruption conviction, which he is appealing. He submitted nomination papers for the election on Friday.
