Huge wave lashes California shores, evacuation warnings issued after many left injured
A massive wave strikes California's shores, prompting evacuation warnings after numerous injuries.
On Thursday, California's shores were battered by massive waves, resulting in coastal flooding and eight reported injuries. Evacuation alerts have been issued for nearby areas. According to KETY-TV, the incident occurred as a significant swell from the Pacific Ocean surged toward the coastline. A bystander video in Ventura captured a rogue wave crashing into a seawall, prompting onlookers to flee inland in panic.
Evacuation warnings were declared in coastal Marin County in the morning and later in Capitola Village. The National Weather Service issued a flash bulletin stating that waves could reach heights of 28 to 33 feet, with reports of flooding in low-lying coastal regions. The advisory emphasized the risk of 'sneaker waves,' occasional larger waves that are dangerous to those near the shore.
Forecasters urged caution, advising people to stay away from rocks and jetties and remain vigilant facing the ocean. The situation may worsen over the weekend as a storm system moves in from the Pacific, particularly impacting southern California. San Diego is anticipated to experience the highest surf on Saturday.
Los Angeles and Southern California are under high surf and coastal flooding advisories until 10 pm on Saturday. The National Weather Service emphasized the life-threatening surf conditions, urging everyone to avoid the water and stay clear of jetties, piers, and other waterside structures.
