Ukraine-Russia war live: 20 dead in Russian border city Belgorod after Kyiv launches retaliatory strikes

Russia has reported that 20 individuals, including two children, were killed in what they described as "indiscriminate" Ukrainian strikes on the provincial capital of Belgorod. Images circulating on social media depict cars engulfed in flames, damaged buildings emitting black smoke, and air raid sirens blaring. The reported targets included a skating rink, a shopping centre, residential structures, and a car.

Following the air strikes, Russia has purportedly requested a meeting of the UN Security Council. Moscow accuses Kyiv of carrying out the attack a day after an 18-hour aerial barrage by Russia killed at least 39 civilians across Ukraine, injuring over 144 people. The airstrikes, described as Russia's largest since the conflict began, caused significant damage to structures such as a maternity hospital, apartment blocks, and schools.

In response to the attacks, the UK announced its decision to send hundreds of defence missiles to Kyiv, condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions as "barbaric."
