The total number of COVID-19 cases in India has now reached 4,50,12,484 since the outbreak in January 2020. According to the Union Health Ministry report, the death toll due to COVID-19 has risen to 55,33,358, with seven COVID-related deaths reported on December 30. On December 29, 41,797 tests were conducted, according to the official report by the Indian Council of Medical Research.
As of December 28, India has reported a total of 145 cases of the JN.1 subvariant of COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its parent lineage, BA.2.86. The WHO has indicated that, based on current evidence, the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low.
The health department reports that Omicron XBB.1.16 is the dominant variant of COVID-19, with a total of 1,972 cases reported. Authorities continue to monitor and respond to the evolving situation to ensure public health and safety.
