Japan earthquake: 155 quakes reported in a day, PM confirms numerous casualties. Ongoing top updates highlight the aftermath and response efforts.
Following a major earthquake in Japan, a tsunami over a meter high was triggered, causing damage to homes and igniting a significant fire. Japan experienced 155 earthquakes since Monday, including a 7.6-magnitude jolt and another exceeding 6 in magnitude, as reported by the country's meteorological office. The powerful earthquake led to tsunami waves, damaging properties and resulting in a major fire that caused destruction overnight.
News footage displayed by local media revealed collapsed buildings, sunken boats at a port, numerous charred homes, and residents without power in freezing temperatures.
At least six people have been reported dead, with police and local authorities retrieving bodies from the rubble of collapsed structures.
Japan's Meteorological Office informed AFP that all tsunami warnings and advisories issued on Monday have been lifted. Officials mentioned that small changes in tidal levels are still possible. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated that the earthquakes caused extensive damage with numerous casualties. He emphasized the urgency of rescuing victims, and with the tsunami warning lifted, the government aims to establish sea routes to reach isolated areas in the northern Noto peninsula. Kishida added that around 100 members of the self-defence forces are currently engaged in search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
