360 fined for drunken driving in Delhi on New Year’s Eve: Police

• The Delhi Traffic Police issued 2,129 challans to drivers for driving under the influence in the 16 days leading up to December 31.

• On New Year's Eve alone, 360 challans were issued for drunken driving.

• This marks a significant increase compared to previous years, with nearly double the number of challans compared to the same period in 2022 and eight times the number compared to 2021.

• A special drive against drunken driving was launched on December 24, with a focus on areas near pubs, bars, and hotels where parties were organized.

• A total of 6,485 challans were issued for various traffic violations in the last two days of 2023.

• The special commissioner of police (traffic) emphasized the need for steeper fines and harsher punishments for those booked under drunken driving to deter future violations.

• In 2023, a total of 16,173 people were booked for drunken driving, with specific areas like Badarpur, Sarita Vihar, Najafgarh, and Hauz Khas reporting the highest number of cases.

• Road safety awareness camps were organized regularly in schools, colleges, and major intersections, including the distribution of short films, lectures, and educational literature about safe driving.

• The resurgence of public mobility, the reopening of pubs and bars, and the lifting of Covid-related restrictions contributed to the increased cases of drunken driving.

• Kapashera, Nangloi, Sangam Vihar, Tilak Nagar, and Nand Nagri Circle recorded the highest number of drunk driving cases on December 31.

• On December 24 and 25, Aman Vihar, Ashok Vihar, Badarpur, Barakhamba Road, Chanakyapuri, Civil Lines, Delhi Cantt, Defence Colony, Daryaganj, and Dwarka Circle reported the highest number of cases on those respective days.
