A cold wave grips North India, causing low visibility; 26 trains delayed.
Cold wave in Northern India persists: Dense fog continues to disrupt train operations in various parts of North India, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, causing low visibility. The Indian Railways reported delays of one to six hours for at least 26 Delhi-bound trains due to the ongoing fog.
On January 2, 26 trains experienced delays, following 21 late trains on the first day of the new year, 2024. On the last day of 2023, 23 trains faced delays in Delhi due to dense fog, resulting in reduced visibility across the region.
Notably, several trains are significantly delayed, with the Amritsar-Nanded Express and Chennai-New Delhi Duronto running behind schedule by almost 7 hours. The Ajmer-Karta Express and Seoni-Ferozpur Patalkot Express are delayed by 6 hours, while the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani and Jammutwai-Ajmer face a 5-hour delay.
Other affected trains include the Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express, Amzangarh-Delhi Kaifiyat Express, Khajurao-Kurukshetra, Katihar-Amritsar Express, and Manikpur-Nizamudin, all experiencing delays of nearly four hours. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a further drop in temperatures during the first week of January 2024, with the mercury hovering between 10 and 7 degrees Celsius at the Safdarjung Observatory in the national capital.
IMD notes that moderate to dense fog covers parts of the region, including Punjab, Haryana, and central parts of Uttar Pradesh. The IMD's social media update on platform X reported very dense fog in isolated pockets of West Uttar Pradesh and dense fog in isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan. 'Very dense' fog refers to visibility between 0 and 50 meters, while 51 to 200 meters is classified as 'dense,' 201 to 500 meters as 'moderate,' and 501 to 1,000 meters as 'shallow.'
