China Releases New Images Of Its Next-Generation Aircraft Carrier Fujian; Awaits Sea Trials
China reveals advanced aircraft carrier "Fujian" with electromagnetic catapult system. Xi Jinping emphasizes military readiness
On Wednesday, Chinese state media released new images of China's latest and most advanced aircraft carrier, initially known as Fujian. These images also featured next-generation launch tracks designed to catapult a wider range of aircraft from the carrier's deck. Revealed to the public in June 2022, the domestically designed and built Fujian surpasses the technological advancements and size of the Shandong, commissioned in 2019, and the Liaoning acquired second-hand from Ukraine in 1998 and refitted domestically, according to Reuters.
A user on the social media platform 'X' shared a now-deleted post, showcasing a clip of the Chinese aircraft carrier undergoing mooring tests. The post included a caption indicating that the PLAN CV-18 Fujian Aircraft Carrier was undergoing planned tests. The video displayed the carrier being towed by a smaller vessel, revealing all three tracks of its electromagnetic catapult system on the deck.
State television quoted a Fujian official stating, "In the new year, we will seize every minute, work with determination, and strive for combat readiness as soon as possible."

Fujian has been undergoing tests, including mooring tests, ahead of its sea trials, which observers expected to commence by 2023. In November, the carrier initiated launch tests for its electromagnetic catapult system, as reported by China's state-controlled newspaper, Global Times.
Apart from the Ford-class aircraft carriers being developed for the US Navy, the Fujian will be the world's only aircraft carrier equipped with the latest Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). China's version of EMALS is noted for its ability to launch various aircraft types, surpassing the capabilities of the Shandong or the Liaoning. It is also deemed more reliable and energy-efficient, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the Chinese military.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has consistently emphasized increased combat readiness and technological advancements, particularly leading up to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 2027. There have been concerns, with some senior U.S. military officers suggesting a potential military takeover of Taiwan by that year. Taiwan has reported ongoing daily military activities by China in the Taiwan Strait, including instances where Chinese fighter jets crossed the strait's median line, previously considered an unofficial barrier. China asserts it does not recognize this boundary.
