Gokhale bridge partial opening pushed by Feb 29
Partial opening of Gokhale Bridge delayed until February 29, with the deadline extension for further construction progress in Mumbai.
The Gokhale Bridge opening in Andheri, Mumbai, is facing a 10-day delay due to unexpected technical issues. Originally scheduled to open by February 15, the opening of one arm has been pushed back to the last week of February, specifically by February 29. The delay is attributed to challenges encountered during the girder lowering stage of the construction.
According to Commissioner Iqbal S Chahal, unexpected technical problems were encountered during the process of lowering the girder. Despite these challenges, it has been confirmed that one arm of the bridge will be opened in late February.
The construction progress involved aligning the girders (iron beams) by November 20, 2023, sliding them towards the railway tracks by December 2, and moving the girder 13 meters north by December 20. The actual lowering of the girder commenced on January 3 after tests by the Railways and RITES. The lowering process was completed by the night of January 13.
Following the opening of the first arm in February, the civic body plans to launch the second girder, to make the entire bridge operational by May 2024. The delay is seen as a setback for Andheri residents eagerly awaiting the completion of the Gokhale Bridge construction.
