Ph.D. scholar from Jharkhand dies at IIT-Kanpur, the third death in a month

In Kanpur, a tragic incident unfolded as a 29-year-old PhD student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) allegedly took her own life in her room on Thursday. This marks the third case of suicide reported on the IIT-Kanpur campus within just one month.

The deceased, identified as Priyanka Jaiswal, hailed from Dumka in Jharkhand and was pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering. She had secured admission to the prestigious institute on December 29 of the previous year. The news of her demise was reported to the police around 1 pm. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered that the door to Jaiswal's room was locked from the inside. Subsequently, they had to force it open, only to find the young scholar lifeless.

The police have called in a forensic team to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Priyanka Jaiswal's death. IIT-Kanpur authorities were alerted by her hostel mates, who then informed the police about the incident.

The Additional DCP (West), Akash Patel, stated that the reasons behind Jaiswal's suicide would be determined after a preliminary investigation and completion of other necessary formalities.

In an official statement, IIT-Kanpur expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Priyanka Jaiswal. The institute disclosed that she had recently joined the Department of Chemical Engineering in December 2023 and was discovered dead in her hostel room in the afternoon. The Institute acknowledged the loss of a promising young student and emphasized that the police investigation would provide insights into the circumstances leading to her death.

The recent string of suicides at IIT-Kanpur includes the tragic incidents of Vikas Kumar Meena, a second-year M.Tech student who reportedly hanged himself on January 11, and Pallavi Chilka, a postdoctoral researcher who took her own life on December 19 by hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room. The institute is grappling with these distressing events, waiting for police investigations to shed light on the underlying factors contributing to these unfortunate incidents.
