US' Avocado Demand Leads to Deforestation Horror in Mexico.

The soaring demand for avocados in the United States may have led to over 70,000 acres of deforestation in neighboring Mexico over the past decade, as reported by Climate Rights International and Guardian Forestal. With Mexico exporting $3 billion worth of avocados annually, 80 percent of which are imported by the US, major US importers supplying supermarket chains like Walmart Inc. and Trader Joe’s Co. have been cultivating avocados in Mexican regions that were often illegally cleared by fires. Despite evidence of deforestation in their supply chains, these companies continue to source avocados from such land.
