Arvind Kejriwal In Jail, Minister Resigns, Quits AAP Citing "Corruption"
Delhi Minister Raaj Kumar Anand resigns from AAP, citing corruption, lack of Dalit representation.
New Delhi: Delhi Minister Raaj Kumar Anand has stepped down from his position and severed ties with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), citing the party's alleged shift from an anti-corruption stance to involvement in corrupt practices. His decision comes in the wake of the Delhi liquor policy case and the subsequent arrests of key AAP leaders, including party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and former deputy Manish Sisodia.
Mr. Anand's resignation sparked immediate reactions, with AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj alleging that Mr. Anand was pressured into leaving by the BJP. However, Mr. Anand did not confirm or hint at any external pressure influencing his decision.
"I joined AAP because of its strong stance against corruption. However, the party's involvement in corrupt practices has compelled me to resign," stated Mr. Anand, who held the portfolio of social welfare, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes minister.
Expressing disappointment, Mr. Anand remarked, "I entered politics inspired by Arvind Kejriwal's vision of transforming the country through political change. While the vision remains, the reality is different. Politics may not have changed, but politicians have."
As the first Delhi government minister to resign directly due to the fallout from Mr. Kejriwal's arrest and the liquor policy case, Mr. Anand also accused the AAP of discriminatory practices in its leadership appointments.
"The Aam Aadmi Party lacks Dalit representation, both in MLAs and councillors. Dalit leaders are sidelined from leadership roles. I adhere to the principles of Baba Saheb Ambedkar. If I cannot advocate for Dalits within the party, then my association with it loses its meaning," Mr. Anand asserted during a press briefing in Delhi.
