Kerala Church protests The Kerala Story with a documentary on Manipur: 'This is fact, not story'.
Kerala churches divided over film screenings: "The Kerala Story" vs. Manipur violence doc.
The divergence within Kerala's churches regarding the screening of "The Kerala Story" became evident on Wednesday when a parish affiliated with the Catholic diocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly exhibited a documentary about the Manipur violence, titled "Cry of the Oppressed," to students during their catechism classes.
Simultaneously, the Church of South India welcomed the local Muslim community to its premises in Manjeri, located in the predominantly Muslim Malappuram district, to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr.
The controversy surrounding the screening of "The Kerala Story" on April 4 by the Catholic diocese of Idukki, preceding its broadcast on Doordarshan, escalated into a political dispute, especially after the dioceses of Thamarassery and Thalassery announced their intentions to show the film to their youth. On Wednesday, a Catholic parish within the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese screened the documentary on the Manipur violence at St. Joseph’s Church, Sanjopuram, in Ernakulam district.
Parish vicar James Panavelil seemingly criticized the screening of "The Kerala Story," which depicts four women joining the Islamic State, stating, "Manipur violence is a reality, not fiction. Showing the film was a reminder that we should not overlook Manipur. Kerala society is wary of propaganda films." He added, "When propaganda narratives are repeatedly circulated, we must counter them with the truth."
It remains uncertain whether other parishes within the Ernakulam archdiocese or elsewhere in Kerala will showcase the Manipur documentary. Many priests within the Ernakulam archdiocese have been in dissent for years against the official leadership of the Church due to alleged financial mismanagement involving the former Church head, Cardinal George Alencherry. Meanwhile, the Thalassery archdiocese, which previously announced its intention to screen "The Kerala Story," reversed its decision. Nonetheless, its youth unit, disregarding the archdiocese's stance, arranged for the film to be shown in Chempanthotty village in Kannur district.
The pro-BJP Christian group, Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action, also declared its intention to screen the film throughout Kerala.
