Task force will review the impact of heat wave during Lok Sabha elections: Election Commission

Amidst a sweltering heatwave, the ongoing Lok Sabha elections prompt the Election Commission of India (ECI) to initiate a review of the heatwave's impact and humidity. They've formed a task force to conduct this review five days before each polling phase. For the upcoming second phase on Friday, the ECI assures that, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there's no significant concern regarding the heatwave; the weather forecast remains "normal." Establishing the task force stands as one of four pivotal decisions made during the meeting. This task force will comprise officials from the poll panel, IMD, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as specified by the Election Commission.

Furthermore, the election authority directs the Health Ministry to issue necessary instructions to prepare for potential disruptions to election operations due to weather conditions. Additionally, it plans to convene a separate review session with state Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to ensure adequate arrangements like tents, drinking water, fans, and other essential facilities are in place at polling stations. Moreover, the ECI resolves to conduct awareness activities to educate the public on precautionary measures (Do's and Don'ts) to mitigate the impact of the heatwave in areas with polling booths.

"The Commission remains vigilant, closely monitoring weather reports to ensure the comfort and well-being of voters, polling personnel, security forces, candidates, and political party leaders," it affirms.

The Lok Sabha elections commenced last Friday and will unfold over seven phases. Following the second phase, voting is scheduled for May 7, 13, 20, 25, and June 1. Vote counting for all 543 constituencies is slated for June 4.
