Google Wallet is now available for Android users in India.

On Tuesday, Google Wallet made its official debut in India, tailored for Android smartphones. The Indian iteration of the app diverges slightly from its international counterparts, focusing on organizing digital tickets for various purposes such as travel, movies, events, public transport passes, and gift cards.

Described as a "secure and private digital wallet" by the Google Wallet website, this platform grants users swift access to a range of services including movie and travel passes, tickets, keys, or IDs shared within the app. Collaborating with 20 Indian brands, Google Wallet has partnered with entities like Flipkart, Air India, IndiGo, PVR, INOX, and MakeMyTrip to facilitate these services. Available on the Google Play Store for Indian Android users, it's important to note that the Indian version of the Wallet app does not support payment functionalities such as saving debit or credit cards for tap payments.

Google Wallet in India offers various services:

  1. Movie and Event Tickets: Android users can digitally store their tickets from venues like PVR or INOX within their Google Wallet for future use.

  2. Boarding Passes: Partnering with airlines like Air India, Air India Express, and IndiGo, as well as online ticketing platforms such as MakeMyTrip, Easymytrip, and Ixigo, Google Wallet enables users to easily access their mobile boarding passes. Pixel smartphone users can further streamline this process by adding their boarding passes through a simple screenshot.

  3. Public Transport: Collaboration with transportation services like Kochi Metro, Hyderabad Metro, VRL Travels, and Abhibus grants users access to transit tickets through the Wallet app.

  4. Document Storage: Users can create new passes within their wallets by capturing a picture of any document containing a barcode or QR code, including luggage tags and parking receipts.

  5. Gift Cards: Google Wallet empowers consumers to store and retrieve reward points and vouchers from various retailers such as Flipkart, Dominos, and Shoppers Stop, as well as loyalty program providers like Pinelabs, EasyRewardz, and Twid.

  6. Automatic Ticket Integration from Gmail: With smart personalization settings enabled in Gmail, certain tickets and passes received via email (e.g., movie or train tickets) will automatically populate in the user's Google Wallet from select partners.
