Kolkata doctor rape-murder: CBI takes accused in custody; celebrities to join massive protest tonight.

Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: People from all walks of life, including men, women, political leaders, and celebrities, are gearing up for a large-scale protest in West Bengal. They plan to gather on the streets, intersections, and main roads to demonstrate against the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the evening of August 14, the eve of India's 78th Independence Day. Earlier in the day, for the first time, doctors, nurses, and other staff from major private hospitals along Kolkata's Eastern Metropolitan Bypass—such as Manipal, Medica, Peerless, and RN Tagore—marched from Mukundapur to Ruby intersection. Meanwhile, a team of senior Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, who arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday morning, has begun investigating the case.

The CBI team, including medical and forensic experts, visited the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital's seminar hall, where the trainee doctor's body was discovered on August 9. According to a central agency official, three groups of CBI officers have been formed to investigate the matter. The protesters plan to take to the streets in at least 45 locations across Bengal at midnight on Wednesday, as reported by The Telegraph.

Organizers in several districts have announced that protests will begin late on Wednesday night and continue past midnight into Independence Day, with the demand for freedom and safety for Bengal’s women. A social media campaign is also encouraging people from all backgrounds to join the protest, which is being called ‘For Women’s Independence on the Midnight of Independence.’ Participants are urged to hold candles and blow conch shells, as reported by The Indian Express.
