ECI issues notice to Haryana BJP for using child in election campaign.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed serious concern regarding a post on X (formerly Twitter) from BJP Haryana's account, which featured a child in a campaign video. This breaches ECI guidelines that ban the use of children in election-related activities and campaigning. The ECI issued a show-cause notice on Wednesday, instructing the chief electoral officer of Haryana to demand an explanation from the BJP Haryana state president. The BJP has been asked to provide a response by 6 p.m. on August 29.

Rules on Child Participation in Poll Campaigns:

  • Children are strictly prohibited from participating in any election-related activities, including rallies, chanting slogans, or distributing posters, as per ECI guidelines and the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act.
  • Political leaders and candidates cannot involve children in any form of campaign activities, including holding or transporting them in vehicles, or including them in rallies.
  • Using children to give the impression of a political campaign through means such as poems, songs, speeches, or political symbols is forbidden.
  • Promoting a party’s achievements or criticizing opponents through children is also prohibited.
  • However, a child simply accompanying a parent or guardian near a political leader, without participating in the campaign, is not considered a violation.

Upcoming Elections: The Election Commission has scheduled the Haryana Assembly elections for October 1, with results to be announced on October 4. In the previous assembly elections, the BJP formed a coalition government with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), but the alliance fell apart over seat-sharing disagreements in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP later formed a government with the support of Independent MLAs.
